A great man is gone...

All the versions of this article:

Georges Debunne

Georges had for many years been the very soul and image of FERPA. After an intense political and trade union activity, in 1985 he launched the idea of a supra-national trade union organisation for elderly persons, and in spite of the obstacles and lack of understanding that he encountered, he managed, with utmost commitment, to found FERPA at the Congress of 1993 – significantly declared the “European Year of the Elderly and of Solidarity between Generations.”

Georges served as President from 1993 to 2001, and moved FERPA forward on the political and organisational front. His work stopped only when illness forced him to abandon his front-liner role.

His political legacy lives on and continues to bear fruit, however.

FERPA today joins his family and all those who knew him in their grief.

Georges was a great trade unionist, a great politician, a great lover of freedom and democracy, and great opponent of violence and tyranny in Europe and the world.

We wish to remember him above all as a great man.
